Press Row Podcast

A wide open field in 2017 has resulted in the most unpredictable and fascinating Sports Game of the Year voting yet! While many of the games were fantastic in general they all had some serious flaws that detracted from their full potential, and because of that expect there to be no consensus "best" game that will sweep its way to a victory.

Will MLB The Show 17 repeat off last year's win with MLB 16? Will NBA 2K18 bounce back or fall even further after the award-winning 2K16 preceded 2K17 slipping to third? Will Madden NFL 18 continue the upward trajectory that saw Madden 17 finish the highest ever for the series as the runner-up last year? Or will it be another game coming from farther back in the pack in a surprise result?

It's an especially tumultuous time for the gaming industry as aggressive monetization tactics face intense pushback from media and consumers. Even as sports games consistently reside near the top of the sales charts and generate extraordinary digital revenue publishers are looking ahead for how to not only sustain that success but grow even further.

In this episode of the Press Row Podcast the subject of microtransactions/loot boxes and their influence on game design is revisited with discussion on how publishers are now responding to the backlash, the adjustments they are making and will have to consider going forward, and the prospects of a subscription-based future which sports games may be best suited and most prepared for of any genre.

What can more powerful hardware do to improve some already very good sports video games? We got the answer this week with the release of the Xbox One X and in this episode of the Press Row Podcast the benefits of the pricey new console are examined.

The likes of Madden NFL 18, FIFA 18, NBA 2K18, and Forza can now be played in native 4K with HDR (true also of the PS4 Pro) but the improvements go beyond the visuals on Xbox One X. Framerates can be better and loading times are significantly shortened - and Madden is the game that seems to have benefited the most.

Other topics discussed include the first news on EA Sports UFC 3 and the release strategy for MLB The Show 18.

2017 has proven to be, in many ways, a banner year for racing games. From Forza 7 to Gran Turismo SportF1 2017 to NASCAR Heat 2Dirt 4 to Project Cars 2, there are plenty of interesting choices for the casual and hardcore racing game fan alike.

However, even the most ardent fans of these titles have concerns. How do lootboxes and in-game economies truly impact Forza 7? How does the non-traditional approach in Gran Turismo translate to fans? Can F1 2017 appeal to people who may not be big fans of the specific series? These questions – and much more – are debated by an excellent crew of racing game experts.

Whether it’s the VC in NBA 2K18 or the increased presence of “loot boxes” in games like Star Wars: Battlefront II and Forza Motorsport 7, the influence on development directly related to monetization efforts is at the forefront of discussion right now amongst gaming press and consumers.

In this episode of the Press Row Podcast the panel covers why it has taken until now for such immense backlash to formulate, the necessity of publishers/developers to find ways to generate digital revenue post-release, whether games focusing on single-player experiences are going extinct, and also debate the concept of loot boxes being tantamount to gambling.

NBA 2K18 and NBA Live 18 came upon their respective releases having traveled dramatically different paths to get there. NBA 2K has grown into the second biggest sports game in the world and is guaranteed to be a smash hit now annually. NBA Live is simply trying to recapture some credibility after eight years defined more by its cancellations than even its sub-par editions.

In this episode of the Press Row Podcast both games are examined closely, with areas such as accessibility, gameplay, franchise and story/career modes discussed. The Nintendo Switch version of NBA 2K18 is evaluated and compared to the experience on other platforms. The big post-release subjects related to NBA 2K18 - uproar over the aggressive implementation of VC and vanishing MyPlayer characters - are of course also major subjects. Each basketball game offers advantages over their competitor to consider, but which game is the right one for you?

In recent years video game publishers have made dramatic shifts in how they promote their upcoming products. Whether it's holding back information longer or who it is that gets early access to spread information and media, the marketing landscape has changed as fewer games are released and they become more reliant on generating year-round digital revenue.

In this episode of the Press Row Podcast we discuss why marketing tactics are evolving and whether any consumer concerns are justified. Madden NFL 18 is currently in the hot seat with some fans for still not having shown off any gameplay despite it being under two weeks now until it goes out through the EA Access trial. Other topics include NBA Playgrounds offering $10 DLC to unlock the entire roster, NBA 2K18 on Switch releasing digital only at first, and NBA Live 18 announcing a demo but still lacking an actual release date or the ability to pre-order.

In many ways, these are great days to be a sports video game fan. However, certain segments of popular games have experienced significant problems, causing enormous issues within each of those games' communities. The way titles are marketed at fans, persistent problems with certain modes, and perceived lack of communication between game makers and game players have embroiled fans and developers alike.

Host Rich Grisham talks with Operation Sports Community Manager Millennium - a man in the middle of a number of these conversations - about the overall situation, how fans should be approaching these issues, and what people on all sides can and should do.

Coming off a win by MLB The Show 16 of the Press Row Podcast Sports Game of the Year Award, MLB The Show 17 reaches the marketplace with naturally high expectations.

The series went big with Ken Griffey Jr. on the cover and found within various modes of play in the game, story-like elements for Road to the Show, new simulation features for Franchise Mode, and more content in Diamond Dynasty which looks to remain the consumer-favorite team-building mode. Server issues however have plagued the game since release marring what otherwise would have been widely-favorable impressions.

After more than 20 years a spiritual successor to the cult classic Mutant League Football has finally reached the red zone. Mutant Football League will release later this year on PC and early 2018 on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The game is described as an “NFL Blitz arcade-style football game, with nasty mutants, ferocious monsters, deadly chainsaws, and lots of gory player deaths, along with some edgy, satirical humor that parodies America’s favorite sport.”

The creator and lead designer of the original game is back to lead development on the new one. We welcome on Michael Mendheim to the Press Row Podcast to talk about the history of mutant football, the ongoing successful Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign and lessons learned from one that came up short in 2013, the challenges of designing a game now vs then, and how fans are being engaged in its development and awareness created in an intensely competitive environment.

Electronic Arts' stock is trading at all-time high levels and in looking forward to fiscal year 2018 (April 2017-March 2018) the company revealed a number of interesting facts and plans related to their various sports franchises.

There's the good: FIFA 17 was the world's biggest selling sports game in 2016 and the company continues to see its digital revenue driven largely by Ultimate Team and free-to-play mobile show no signs of slowing down.

There's the bad: NBA Live has now been delayed/cancelled for a fourth time in a seven year span and the original plan of releasing a golf game every other year appears to have been abandoned.

Host Bryan Wiedey and Rich Grisham discuss this news and more, including the confirmation of both Madden NFL 18 transitioning to the Frostbite Engine and FIFA 18 getting a second season of "The Journey" in this episode of the Press Row Podcast!

Now into its 8th year, the Pastapadre Community Awards have set out to recognize all the efforts made in sports gaming which go well beyond just that of naming the "Sports Game of the Year." For 2016 the awards expanded to 12 categories and collected over 33,000 votes in the process. Sports video games are complex and rich in content, and no one game excels in every area that make them up. The Community Awards are an opportunity to help identify the standouts from specific aspects of the games and over time the annual process has been shown to identify trends for the individual franchises as well as the industry.

Bryan Wiedey and Rich Grisham reveal the results of the 2016 Pastapadre Community Awards and provide analysis of what the numbers say about the games in the latest episode of the Press Row Podcast. The highly anticipated home/handheld hybrid Nintendo Switch will release on March 3rd for $300, eventually require a paid subscription for online play, and expanding storage will a be a practical necessity by adding on a separately purchased SDXC memory card. Switch has a dismal launch lineup outside of the new Zelda, while sports games look to be a ways off with FIFA and NBA 2K18 both officially in development but not releasing until later in the year.

Rich Grisham and T.J. Lauerman join host Bryan Wiedey on a new Press Row Podcast in reacting to Nintendo's reveal event. In terms of pricing where does the Switch stand compared to Xbox One and PS4? Should sports games on Switch be unique experiences or offer what are essentially ports from those other systems? Can sports games survive on a Nintendo platform when they rely so heavily on post-release digital revenue?

There's a lot to be intrigued by out of the Nintendo Switch but still many more questions to be answered about its viability particularly as it relates the sports gaming genre.

While it's uphill battle for sports games in the world of eSports the likes of EA Sports and 2K Sports are dedicated to carving out a place for their franchises in the lucrative competitive arena. The games are battling the actual real-life sporting broadcasts for interest from viewers, while also struggling to prove a compelling watch when they often fail to look like the sports they are supposed to represent due to the way they are being played.

Madden NFL 17's first competition of the year is underway and a major exploit is already being utilized. When money is on the line will the video games ever be able to present a fair playing field and will an audience ever follow? Bryan Wiedey and Rich Grisham discuss the potential for eSports to grow within the genre and the stumbles that have been encountered in the early days in the latest episode of the Press Row Podcast presented by Hit The Pass.

NBA 2K17 is now just 27 days away from release. Very little is known about the game, and that's a departure from the norm this close to a product coming out - particularly one with the massive popularity of NBA 2K.

Naturally fans are seeking out info, but not only are they failing to find it on social media, they're being treated with a level of contempt by official reps for 2K Sports simply because they want to know about the game they're planning to spend $60 or more on next month.

Two major controversies arose this week and they have raised questions regarding the rights of consumers who purchase video games and spend money on digital items within them.

With MLB The Show 16, developer Sony San Diego banned a relatively large number of player accounts but some users may have found themselves banished unjustly. In FIFA the integrity of Ultimate Team mode has been brought into question, with high-value player cards not having played up to the level at which they were advertised.

With those situations in mind it's fair to wonder just what is actually owned when a video game is bought, and how it's possible to determine whether you're actually getting what you're paying for with digital-based content when there's no oversight or regulation.

That's the focus this episode of the Press Row Podcast presented by Hit The Pass. What rights do consumers have or not have, given the terms of which that are required to be agreed upon in order to play the games, and what should change about the way publishers deal with consumers when they feel the need to take certain actions?

One of the busiest weeks for gaming news every year has come to a close for 2016. E3 and EA Play offered up a prime opportunity for publishers to reveal trailers and new features for their upcoming suite of games. In the case of EA Sports that meant info on a story mode for FIFA 17 and Franchise improvements for Madden NFL 17.

A new mountain sports game called Steep was revealed, a sequel to The Golf Club was announced, and Forza Horizon 3 debuted a trailer along with details on its feature set. Beyond just games Microsoft made the biggest news with the announcement of a new console that'll be out late 2017.

Bryan Wiedey and Rich Grisham get together in this episode of the Press Row Podcast presented by Hit The Pass to talk over reactions to everything that happened, the state of E3 and its accompanying press briefings, and whether sports video games can ever become successful in the world of eSports.

Then Madden NFL 17 designer John White joins the show to go through what's new for Franchise mode this year, which includes a new way to play through games faster and a real-time score ticker.

Take a look at wishlists for almost any annualized sports game and you'll see fans requesting changes to commentary. It's an area of the video games that is one of the most difficult to reproduce from actual televised broadcasts. Once a commentary team is in place developers hesitate to make major changes, as the audio libraries continue to build year-by-year and priorities inevitably are directed elsewhere. Scrapping and starting over is rare.

The Madden NFL series is one of the few that has done so however - and multiple times in the last decade. The latest is about to take place as Brandon Gaudin and Charles Davis will be replacing Jim Nantz and Phil Simms with Madden NFL 17.

Rich Grisham interviews Gaudin and Davis, along with Madden producer Christian McLeod, in this episode of the Press Row Podcast presented by Hit The Pass. The group discusses everything from how the antiquated commentary system has been "blown up" for Madden 17, why Gaudin and Davis were selected for their respective positions in the booth, how commentary may differ from mode-to-mode, examples of some bizarre lines they've had to record, and the work that will be done regularly during the season to update commentary.

While basketball fans may be excited that NBA 2K17 will be out earlier than ever before with its move up to mid-September, it only further compresses the window where the majority of the sports games for the year are released. Within a four week span, six major sports games will go out, and there may be even others still yet to be announced.

In this episode of the Press Row Podcast presented by Hit the Pass, the discussion centers on what has led to this situation coming about, how it affects publishers and consumers, whether it's unhealthy for the sports gaming genre going forward, and how it could possibly be fixed.

The current state of sports games - on console, PC, and mobile devices - is ever-changing and evolving at a rapid pace. Former creative director of the Madden NFL series Ian Cummings returns to the Press Row Podcast to join host Bryan Wiedey and friend of the show Rich Grisham to discuss his own mobile game as well as the "bigger picture."

For starters, Ian describes his mobile game Photo Finish Horse Racing that is gaining steam on iOS and Android, the evolution of it from a one-man side project to a full-blown experience, and the challenges he has faced since launching last year. As the conversation continues, the group then pivots to a breakdown of the first features announced for Madden NFL 17. Ian weighs in on his reaction to them, what he sees happening with the franchise, and then moves to evaluating the state of the sports gaming genre as a whole. It's a fascinating look into our current sports game landscape from someone who's been in it from multiple perspectives and has emerged successfully in 2016 as an industry leader and voice of the consumer at the same time.

EA Sports has been unable to recover from the attempted reboot of NBA Live as NBA Elite while at the same time seeing their competition flourish to become a juggernaut. It's been six years but the company has yet to produce a quality and compelling product since that fiasco and in the process consumers have lost all confidence in the Live brand. The series simply can't escape its past.

Knowing that a shake-up was necessary EA yesterday confirmed the first report of Live being pushed back to 2017. Despite that acknowledgement uncertainty will continue to surround the series as there's no guarantee it will again see the light of day on consoles. If it makes it back as currently scheduled the form in which it does could be very different than what consumers have become accustomed to with traditional annualized sports games.

Team-building modes in sports games are intended to be played for months on end, if not year-round, making them initially tough to assess when in the early days following their respective releases. With over three weeks now having been spent playing Diamond Dynasty in MLB The Show 16 there's a lot more that has been evaluated following the coverage in the review roundtable episode, so host Bryan Wiedey and frequent guest T.J. Lauerman discuss everything there is to do with the popular mode in an all-new Press Row Podcast presented by Hit The Pass.

Whether it's the new card types, Captains, Missions, Collections, Battle Royale, Conquest, and the Inside Edge daily ratings adjustments, everything that's new in Diamond Dynasty is covered. Additionally, server-related problems slowing down menu navigation and causing "Challenge Failed" errors require mentioning as the experience has been considerably hampered and necessitated multiple emergency patches. The duo also goes over their current lineups, the decisions that have been made in constructing their rosters, and sleeper picks to consider using on your own teams out there.

EA Sports UFC 2 is undeniably a stronger product than the company's first two efforts at the sport of MMA that released in 2010 and 2014. From the Knockout Physics System and KO Mode to new controls for transitions and the introduction of Ultimate Team there's a lot there to be evaluated. While much of what has been done is positive there's also submissions proving to be a non-factor and a disappointing Career Mode to consider. How does the product stand on its own, and could this be the game that reverses the trend that has seen a decline in sales with every new UFC video game release?

Press Row Podcast: Legends of the Past and Present

The NBA 2K series has long celebrated the history of the league and its players. Now, however, its development team is faced with an interesting, and unenviable task: how to replicate the skills of an active legend-in-the-making doing things that have never been seen before. Another series, Out of the Park Baseball, is back with its 17th edition that expands upon the historical teams that trace back all the way to 1919 with real historical minor leagues and a new Historical Exhibition Mode.

In this episode of the Press Row Podcast, NBA 2K developers Mike Wang and Scott O'Gallagher join the show to discuss why the current shooting system in place can't support what Stephen Curry has been doing and possible solutions to present him with new capabilities in 2K16 and going forward in the franchise. After that, Rich Grisham and T.J. Lauerman come on to discuss everything to do with Out of the Park Baseball 17 which is out later this month. After a lull of several months there are new sports game releases on the horizon. MLB The Show 16 will land in late March and news this week relates to Road to the Show and a new feature called ShowTime. Is that mode in particular getting too gimmicky? Meanwhile there's a lot going on for mid-March's EA Sports UFC 2 from a beta, to announcement of Mike Tyson, live streams of gameplay, and details on Ultimate Team. What stands out the most as the publisher hopes for the sequel to fare better than their first effort with the license? Additionally there was the announcement from EA that they'll be holding their own event rather than having a presence at E3. What does that mean for both EA and the future of E3?

Owen weighs in on last week's discussion about a wishlist for next year's MLB The Show, Bryan discusses the nifty new content for Rocket League, and then the entire crew breaks down the significance of the new, large patches for both Madden NFL 16 and NBA 2K16. What does the extensive support of these titles mean to consumers these days, and what does it mean when other titles are not supported as much?

Enjoy the show!

The 157th episode of the Press Row Podcast is a series of three discussions between Rich Grisham, Bryan Wiedey, and our community. Up first is a chat about hopes and expectations for MLB 16 The Show as we near the time of year that we typically start to hear about new features for Sony's excellent baseball title. Next, the topic shifts to the concern about pro athletes, violent or illegal off-field behavior, and the responsibility of game publishers to keep or remove those players from their game. Last, Rich has a guilty pleasure in the new Need For Speed, and chats with Bryan about why he thinks that is.

Enjoy the show!

Whether you’re a big fan or have zero interest, the explosive growth of money, coverage, and influence of eSports is undeniable. As major game publishers analyze the eSports landscape, what – if anything – does it mean for fans of “traditional” sports video games? What are the similarities and differences between mainstream sports and eSports? Why have eSports become so popular in the first place? Rich Grisham is joined by Kat Bailey to chat about all of these topics on Press Row for the first time.

A decade ago, the most monumental decision in sports gaming history took place. Electronic Arts secured the exclusive license to make NFL-branded console video games, and the industry has never been the same again. 10 years later, what does that mean? Is it possible, much less likely, that anyone will ever make a competitor to Madden? If so, what would it take to accomplish it? Join our panel of Owen Good, Kat Bailey, Bryan Wiedey, and Rich Grisham as they explore this issue.

Read Rich's Sporting News article right here, which launched the discussion: Will Madden ever have competition?

These are fascinating times in the sports game world, with no better illustration of changing consumer behaviors and new business models than the battle between NBA 2K16 and NBA Live 16. The tales of these two games - the dizzying sales success of 2K versus the allegedly dismal failure of Live to capture attention - provide an interesting view into how sports games are now made, marketed, and distributed. Cicero Holmes, Kahlief Adams, and Bryan Wiedey join Rich Grisham to discuss these wildly varying situations.

Press Row Podcast – Episode 150 – FIFA 16/Pro Evolution 2016 Review Roundtable

The 150th (!) episode of the Press Row Podcast gets all our international football-loving friends together to chat all about the brand-new FIFA 16 as well as quite a bit of Pro Evolution 2016. The panel discusses the on-pitch gameplay, new ways to experience Ultimate Team, the controversial FUT Draft mode, and why some people may be feeling a bit of a missing spark with a lack of significant new ways to play despite FIFA’s overall excellence. PES 2016 also gets some love, as the group compares and contrasts the two games and celebrates the fact that two great soccer games are available today – something we can’t say about most other sports.
