Press Row Podcast

With Madden NFL 16 and MLB 15 The Show as the currently-available big-time sports games (not for long, though, as hockey, soccer, and hoops games are coming out quickly!) a few of our regular Press Row panelists get together to debate the merits of the two against each other. Kat, Bryan, T.J, and Rich analyze how Madden is faring three weeks after release, and compare and contrast gameplay, modes, and Ultimate Team vs Diamond Dynasty between the two games.

In addition, Kat Bailey drops by (again) to chat about her hands-on time with NBA 2K16 at the development studio. She's very impressed with what was on display and has a lot of interesting perspectives on where the game stands.

As we near the arrival of one of the most anticipated sports games ever - between a new Spike Lee-driven story, significantly upgraded franchise features offline and online, ambitious on-court gameplay additions, and new collaborative modes - host Rich Grisham sits down with two of the NBA 2K16 development team members to talk about what it all means. Scott O'Gallagher and Nino "Da Czar" Samuel join Rich for a wide-ranging discussion on what the NBA 2K franchise really means these days, why they think it's going to be the best basketball game ever made, and what's in store both now and the future.

Press Row Podcast – Episode 137 –The trouble(s) with FIFA

This week’s episode is a conversation with a full panel all about FIFA – namely, EA’s relationship to the embattled global organization and the reaction to the recent announcement of the inclusion of women into this fall’s FIFA 16. To what extent should EA evaluate its partnership with FIFA, considering the damning revelations of corruption and near-slave labor building World Cup stadiums? Should we be happy that a dozen women’s national teams have been added for FIFA 16, or should we be unhappy that there’s not more that can be done with them? It’s a spirited debate that goes in several unexpected directions.

For the third straight year, the Press Row Podcast invaded PAX East for a panel on the state of sports games. This year’s session was titled ‘Sports Games at the Crossroads,’ which explored a number of topics. These include the continued expansion of Ultimate Team modes and their influence on overall sports game development, whether big-time sports games have gotten too difficult, and how the market could look to expand while continuing to serve its base. It was a spirited session, and we’re happy that we can deliver it to all of the listeners of the show.

With all the news coming out recently about new Virtual Reality devices from Sony, Valve, Oculus Rift, and others, we thought it would be a good time to examine the possibilities for VR in the sports games we love. Several of us from the Press Row Podcast recently collaborated for The Sporting News to create a Sports Game Power Rankings list. In the 123rd episode of Press Row, host Rich Grisham is joined by PastaPadre’s Bryan Wiedey and Operation Sports’ Chris Sanner to discuss the list – why it was organized the way it was, reasons for the selections, and various ways that games can move up or down as we get nearer to the start of the 2015 sports video game season next month.

It’s the 122nd episode of the Press Row Podcast, featuring a near-complete panel diving into two significant topics. Up first, the crew examines how Diamond Dynasty seems to (so far, at least) be a significant focus for MLB 15 The Show. Included in this segment, Samit Sarkar describes his initial impressions of The Show from a media event he attended. Up next, it’s the question that set off a raging debate this week – is NBA 2K bigger than Madden? Owen Good and Kat Bailey have written compelling pieces about it (spurred by an interview with Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick), and they, along with the rest of the team, have an intense discussion about whether or not this is the case.

Press Row Podcast – Episode 120 – 2015 Season Preview

For the first time since the 2014 Game of the Year show, we get the regular gang back together to look ahead to what 2015 may have to offer. Rather than lining up each game and wondering what it will be, the crew contemplates questions such as which sports game franchise has the most at stake, whether or not any major game will dramatically shift its approach, and how potential indie sport games may disrupt or influence licensed fare. As always, none of the panelists are aware of who wins coming into the show, and the discussions leading up to the unveiling and the reactions afterwards are the best part of it. Press Row Podcast – Episode 109 – The age of broken launches

The 109th episode of the Press Row Podcast is a special episode, taking a look at how the mainstream and independent media have to change their approaches to covering games in the current market.  Polygon’s Owen Good and PastaPadre’s Bryan Wiedey join host Rich Grisham to reflect on the first year of the PS4 and Xbox One launches. It’s startling just how many titles – sports games and otherwise – have suffered crippling problems at launch and beyond. Should “Day 1” reviews exist anymore? Why do sites tolerate embargoes that lift after the retail release of a game? Should sites refuse post-launch embargoes over all? How can a game properly be covered after launch – and is there an audience for that coverage? Do sports games get a fair shake when compared to other AAA titles with much larger teams and longer development times?

Enjoy!

Press Row Podcast - Making "The Golf Club"

It’s unheard of! Developing, publishing, and supporting an independent sports games on next-generation console platforms? In 2014? The sports game landscape may have gotten smaller in the past few years, but the team at HB Studios saw an opportunity where others saw risk. The result is “The Golf Club”, a simulation golf experience that will soon hit the PS4 and the Xbox One (and is already available on Steam Early Access). The 94th edition of the Press Row Podcast features an extended 1-on-1 discussion between host Richard Grisham (@richgrisham) and The Golf Club Executive Producer Peter Garcin (@rawktron); the two discuss a host of issues, including key game design decisions, how the team navigated and processed the Early Access feedback,  going through the console submission process, and the freedom and anxiety that comes from attempting to self-publish a sports game in today’s complex landscape. It’s an open, honest conversation that provides a unique look at how The Golf Club is coming together in its stretch run.

Press Row Podcast - FIFA World Cup Brazil Developer One-on-One

In the 76th episode of the Press Row Podcast, host Rich Grisham (@richgrisham) has a one-on-one sit-down with FIFA World Cup Brazil creative director Matt Prior. The two discuss a number of topics surrounding the game as well as the tournament itself – how the team distinguishes World Cup from its annual counterpart, the approach the developers take to best represent the distinct atmosphere that a World Cup represents, the new and returning modes specific to a World Cup video game, the tough decision to eschew the PS4/Xbox One/PC, and much more. It’s a fun conversation that sheds light on how and why the FIFA team designed their World Cup game the way they did.

Press Row Podcast - Desert Island Sports

In the 75th episode of the Press Row Podcast, we have some fun discussing what we’ve been playing and some reaction to hands-on time with the eagerly-anticipated MLB 14 The Show on the PS4. After that, though, the heart of the show deals with a fun conversation about each panelist’s all-time “desert island” single player, couch co-op, and online multiplayer sports games. It’s topped off by the all-time “desert island” sports gaming system. What would your choice be?

Press Row Podcast - NBA Live State of the Union

The 74th episode of the Press Row Podcast is an in-depth and at times fascinating look into the state of the NBA Live franchise as it stands today. Host Rich Grisham sits down with the Executive Producer of NBA Live Sean O’Brien to examine the game’s launch, its post-release support, how the team has reacted to the criticism from the gaming press and the Live community, how they’re balancing supporting NBA Live 14 against NBA Live 15, and where the team goes from here.

There aren’t a lot of people who would have this kind of conversation, so we thank Sean for his participation. No one but Operation Sports and the Press Row Podcast will deliver a show like this.  Enjoy!

In the 73rd episode of the Press Row Podcast, our regular panel dives into a bunch of interesting topics surrounding what’s quickly become a busy spring sports game season. Up first – after a brief discussion about everyone’s experience with the Titanfall beta - the crew reacts to the MLB 14 The Show release dates as well as the specific features that intrigues each person. Next comes a discussion about the just-released NASCAR ’14 and its place in the market. Listener questions come next, including items about the lack of information about RBI Baseball, the lack of World Cup soccer on next-gen consoles, and how – or if – each panelist purposefully plays their sports games in unconventional ways.

The 58th episode of the Press Row Podcast features a critical analysis of NBA Live 14, perhaps the most fascinating sports game story of 2013. The show is a combination of two events – a Press Row Hangout from the night that NBA Live officially launched as well as a follow-up conversation of the Xbox One Launch Press Row Hangout. The first (and longer) section features host Rich Grisham along with PastaPadre’s Bryan Wiedey, ThatSportsGamer.com’s TJ Lauerman, and The Gaming Tailgate’s Chris Jacobs. The second segment, which takes place after EA’s “apology” of sorts for the launch state of the game, features Owen Good and Chris Sanner along with Rich and Bryan.

Enjoy the show!

To gear up for the release of two next-generation consoles in the next two weeks – and the first release of an NBA Live title in four years - Episode 56 of the Press Row Podcast features a complete, unedited recording of host Rich Grisham’s (@richgrisham) sit-down with three NBA Live development team members for the first hands-on play time with the game. You’ll hear Executive Producer Sean O’Brien’s (@seanobs) take on the state of the franchise, producer Ryan Ferwerda (@ryanferwerda) go through all of the game’s features, and designer Scott O’Gallagher (@scottogallagher) take Rich through the controls and play a couple of games.
