Press Row Podcast

Here it is! The most anticipated show of the year – the 2014 Press Row Podcast Sports Game of the Year. The votes have been tallied and the winners are announced. As always, none of the panelists are aware of who wins coming into the show, and the discussions leading up to the unveiling and the reactions afterwards are the best part of it. This year we also add two new twists – we award our first-ever Rookie of the Year award and we “present” the Sports Game of the Year award to the development team for their reaction! It’s our best-ever Game of the Year episode, and we hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we did putting it all together. Happy Holidays!

Press Row Podcast – Episode 109 – The age of broken launches

The 109th episode of the Press Row Podcast is a special episode, taking a look at how the mainstream and independent media have to change their approaches to covering games in the current market.  Polygon’s Owen Good and PastaPadre’s Bryan Wiedey join host Rich Grisham to reflect on the first year of the PS4 and Xbox One launches. It’s startling just how many titles – sports games and otherwise – have suffered crippling problems at launch and beyond. Should “Day 1” reviews exist anymore? Why do sites tolerate embargoes that lift after the retail release of a game? Should sites refuse post-launch embargoes over all? How can a game properly be covered after launch – and is there an audience for that coverage? Do sports games get a fair shake when compared to other AAA titles with much larger teams and longer development times?

Enjoy!

The 103rd episode of the Press Row Podcast is a direct result of community feedback! Up first, host Rich Grisham chats with FIFA 15 producer Santiago Jaramillo, who discusses (among many other things) some of the differences between this year and last year and how players can approach it this season. Up next is a discussion between Rich and 2 FIFA experts - regular Press Row panelist Kat Bailey and GoodGameBro’s Corey Andress – who totally geek out on very specific ways to get better at every aspect of FIFA 15, including scoring, defense, tactics, substitutions, and roster management. Press Row Podcast - Making "The Golf Club"

It’s unheard of! Developing, publishing, and supporting an independent sports games on next-generation console platforms? In 2014? The sports game landscape may have gotten smaller in the past few years, but the team at HB Studios saw an opportunity where others saw risk. The result is “The Golf Club”, a simulation golf experience that will soon hit the PS4 and the Xbox One (and is already available on Steam Early Access). The 94th edition of the Press Row Podcast features an extended 1-on-1 discussion between host Richard Grisham (@richgrisham) and The Golf Club Executive Producer Peter Garcin (@rawktron); the two discuss a host of issues, including key game design decisions, how the team navigated and processed the Early Access feedback,  going through the console submission process, and the freedom and anxiety that comes from attempting to self-publish a sports game in today’s complex landscape. It’s an open, honest conversation that provides a unique look at how The Golf Club is coming together in its stretch run.

In the 77th episode of the Press Row Podcast, the largest panel to date gathers to discuss baseball “outside the box” as we near the start of the real and virtual hardball seasons. The entire episode is focused on different ways the panelists would like to experience baseball – from historical options to new online features to immersive technology. It’s a very different episode than we’ve ever done; each panelist is given the opportunity to present their idea and have the rest of the crew react (positively or not).

Press Row Podcast - FIFA World Cup Brazil Developer One-on-One

In the 76th episode of the Press Row Podcast, host Rich Grisham (@richgrisham) has a one-on-one sit-down with FIFA World Cup Brazil creative director Matt Prior. The two discuss a number of topics surrounding the game as well as the tournament itself – how the team distinguishes World Cup from its annual counterpart, the approach the developers take to best represent the distinct atmosphere that a World Cup represents, the new and returning modes specific to a World Cup video game, the tough decision to eschew the PS4/Xbox One/PC, and much more. It’s a fun conversation that sheds light on how and why the FIFA team designed their World Cup game the way they did.

Press Row Podcast - NBA Live State of the Union

The 74th episode of the Press Row Podcast is an in-depth and at times fascinating look into the state of the NBA Live franchise as it stands today. Host Rich Grisham sits down with the Executive Producer of NBA Live Sean O’Brien to examine the game’s launch, its post-release support, how the team has reacted to the criticism from the gaming press and the Live community, how they’re balancing supporting NBA Live 14 against NBA Live 15, and where the team goes from here.

There aren’t a lot of people who would have this kind of conversation, so we thank Sean for his participation. No one but Operation Sports and the Press Row Podcast will deliver a show like this.  Enjoy!

Next comes a discussion about the just-released NASCAR ’14 and its place in the market. Listener questions come next, including items about the lack of information about RBI Baseball, the lack of World Cup soccer on next-gen consoles, and how – or if – each panelist purposefully plays their sports games in unconventional ways.
